The project will begin by establishing a scientific foundation through seasonal field surveys across ten different agroecosystems throughout Rwanda. This research component is crucial for understanding the current state of pollinator populations, documenting species diversity, and identifying which areas face the greatest risks. This baseline data will then guide targeted conservation strategies and inform advocacy efforts.

The approach recognizes that effective pollinator conservation requires both habitat creation and community involvement. The project plans to create physical safe spaces for pollinators through pollinator-friendly gardens, beehives, and plant nurseries, starting with pilot programs in Kinigi before expanding across Musanze through local partnerships with the Musanze District government and environmental authorities such as Rwanda Environmental Management Authority.

Equally important is the community engagement component, which acknowledges that long-term success depends on changing local practices and attitudes. The project will work directly with farmers and residents through workshops, awareness campaigns, and educational materials to encourage adoption of pollinator-friendly practices.

The ultimate goal extends beyond immediate conservation outcomes to influence national agricultural policy, ensuring that pollinator-friendly approaches become integrated into Rwanda’s broader agricultural framework. This reflects an understanding that sustainable pollinator conservation requires systemic change at multiple levels, from individual farming practices to national policy.
