JRS celebrates the successful completion of Conserve Global’s Advancing Community Conservation Management through Integrated Habitat Monitoring in Northern Zambia Game Management Areas project. Over the past 36 months the project generated volumes of technical biodiversity and landscape data as well as socio-economic and other community-focused data and information.
Some of the key outputs we would like to highlight include:
- Comprehensive baseline floral and faunal data for Tondwa and Kaputa GMAs, and Nsumbu National Park.
- High-resolution land-cover and vegetation maps covering Tondwa and Kaputa GMAs and Nsumbu National Park.
- Robust communication and outreach efforts to ensure that project outputs reach and are used by intended audiences.
- Detailed technical reports, including the community-led seed propagation report and reports on historical and current land use and land cover.
- Integration of scientific and traditional knowledge, therefore ensuring the preservation of local ecological knowledge alongside scientific data.
- Capacity building in the collection and use of scientific data and information
The project has significantly influenced both local policy frameworks and on-the-ground conservation management by transforming biodiversity data into actionable governance tools. Its impact ranges from district-level development planning to the technical day-to-day monitoring of protected areas. Examples highlighted in the report include:
- Use of biodiversity and land-cover mapping data by the Department of Forestry to inform the Integrated Development Plan for Nsama District, supporting evidence-based land-use decision making.
- Support to the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) in informing the mid-term review of the General Management Plans for the Tondwa and Kaputa GMAs scheduled for 2026.
- Facilitation of Village Action Group (VAG) boundary clarification ahead of Nsama Community Resource Board (CRB) elections, enabling clearer identification of GMA boundaries and supporting zonation for settlement and resource use.
- Development and implementation of a targeted fire management plan for Tondwa GMA by Tondwa Conservation Limited (TCL), directly informed by project land-cover and threat mapping.
- Initiation of Village Land Use Planning, helping local partners identify priority areas and conservation “hotspots” for adaptive management.
- Early use of project data to shape a concept note for climate-smart agriculture and to explore innovative conservation finance mechanisms, such as carbon or biodiversity tokens
